Success Rates
Whilst great advances have been made in assisted conception
since the birth of the first IVF baby Louise Brown in 1978 and the
pregnancy rates with treatment have risen, most patients must not
expect a baby with every treatment.
All units are required to report their success rates with
treatment to the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority
(HFEA), and these figures can be very helpful for patients in
assessing their chances and planning their treatment, caution has
to be exercised when looking at these figures.
Many factors influence the success rates of IVF and ICSI
treatments that are outside the control of clinics and clinicians.
The most important of these factors is female age, the effects of
which can be seen on the pregnancy rates of all treatments compiled
by the HFEA. (see graph fig1 ) Other factors such as duration of
infertility, previous pregnancies, cause of infertility, blood
levels of hormones, male age and sperm quality, pelvic conditions
such as fibroids, endometriosis and damage to the fallopian tubes
all play a part in determining the chances of successful
treatment.
For this reason, although we publish our results the true
chances of treatment can only be given after your initial
consultation and with the results of your investigations.
Other factors that influence the success rates of treatment
include the number of embryos replaced, whilst this may increase
the number of successful cycles it does increase the risk of
multiple pregnancy. Whilst most people see twins as a blessing this
does increase risk (Multiple Births, IVF
Pack, Providing Fertility Treatment for Women of 40
years of age and over) and every attempt is made to reduce the
risk of multiple pregnancy rates whilst increasing pregnancy rates
as demonstrated in our figures
