Undergraduate Medical Education
The
University of Liverpool introduced a new and innovative medical
course in 1996. The course adopts a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach, which
encourages student directed study and maximises the benefits of
learning within a clinical context. Students have patient contact
in clinical settings from midway through year one which increases
as the course progresses. Years 4 & 5 are almost entirely
clinically based. The Countess of Chester accepts students in years
4 and 5 of their medical education.
Student numbers have increased year on year and there are now up
to 42 students undertaking fourth year placements (36 weeks) and up
to 20 consecutive fifth year medical students rotating through 5
eight week blocks. In addition Special Study Modules (SSMs) are
offered to students in year 4.
