Equipment Library and Decontamination Unit (ELDU)

The decontamination of re-usable medical devices is viewed as the key to the control of transmissible diseases such as Hepatitis B and antibiotic resistant organisms such as MRSA.

The function of the ELDU is to provide a high quality, efficient and cost effective service to wards and departments across the Trust by supplying appropriately decontaminated equipment on a temporary basis to support clinical practice and to provide equal access.

The primary aim of the ELDU Management Team is to deliver and develop the service to users in such a way as to meet all objectives and to work with the Trust as the demands of the service change.

The Equipment Library & Decontamination Unit (ELDU) as well as decontaminating hospital equipment also supply and decontaminate patient support surfaces (pressure relieving mattresses). The decontamination of mattresses is necessary to prevent cross infection to patients. An audit is conducted annually by an external company on all mattresses within the Trust to ensure that the highest standards are maintained.

The staff in ELDU follow strict decontamination procedures and in doing so are helping to bring down MRSA and C.Diff rates, as well as other healthcare associated infections.
