Equipment Library and Decontamination Unit
The decontamination of re-usable medical devices is viewed as
the key to the control of transmissible diseases such as Hepatitis
B and antibiotic resistant organisms such as MRSA.
The function of the ELDU is to provide a high quality, efficient
and cost effective service to wards and departments across the
Trust by supplying appropriately decontaminated equipment on a
temporary basis to support clinical practice and to provide equal
access.
The primary aim of the Facilities Management Team will be to
deliver and develop the service to users in such a way as to meet
the objectives of the Facilities Management Services and to work
with the Trust as the demands of the service change.
The Equipment Library & Decontamination Unit (ELDU) as well
as decontaminating hospital equipment also supply and decontaminate
patient support surfaces (pressure relieving mattresses). The
decontamination of mattresses is necessary to prevent cross
infection to patients.
The staff in ELDU follows strict decontamination procedures and
in doing so are helping in bringing down MRSA and C.Diff rates, as
well as other healthcare associated infections.
