Countess Gem of the Month… Helen Fullwood
Project Accountant Helen Fullwood is the latest Countess Gem of the month after her work to support the transition of vascular services across Chester, Warrington and Wirral being managed at the Countess.
Previously, with the Countess becoming a tertiary SMART (vascular) centre a few years ago, the teams across all three areas started working in a more collaborative way. It was then decided that it would make more sense and improve pathways for patients if the management of the service came under one organisation.
It was Helen’s hard work, dedication and support during this switch that made a big impression on her colleagues and led to her nomination as a Countess Gem.
Helen said: “It was a really good piece of work because it was great to work with colleagues from other organisations and build those relationships. Across the finance teams we worked really well together with an open approach and we tried to overcome problems as they arose. It was really rewarding to be involved in the wider team effort across all three sites.”

Business Performance Manager Laura Bennett said: “Helen has been heavily involved in the transition of vascular services whereby Chester, clinically and operationally manage all vascular activity at Wirral and Warrington. Helen has worked tirelessly to develop a financial model for all three sites to use, shown patience and given her full support to the operational teams. Helen's support and hard-work should not go unnoticed. She is a huge asset to the finance and contracts team.”
“Laura has always said to me how grateful she’s been but I’ve always seen it as just doing my job in a piece of wider teamwork really. It’s my job to support and that’s my role. It’s lovely to be appreciated when so many other people do so many amazing things, especially clinical staff, but the whole purpose of this project was to ultimately improve care for patients.”
Deputy Director of People and Organisation Dee Appleton-Cairns said: “When people think about a hospital they often overlook people in roles that aren’t involved in frontline healthcare, but roles like Helen’s pave the way for our clinical staff to work in a safe, kind and effective way. Laura is right to say that her hard work shouldn’t go unnoticed and that’s why I’m delighted she is our latest Countess Gem.”
About Countess Gems
‘Countess Gems’ are a monthly recognition awards scheme at the Countess of Chester Hospital, with members of staff nominating colleagues who they think deserve special praise. Every person/team nominated officially becomes a ‘Countess Gem’ with a certificate. Once a month the leadership group reviews all the nominations and selects an overall winner. This team/individual will then receive £125 to spend with in-house Catering Services to celebrate. The Countess Gems awards are funded through donations from patients and families in thanks for the care they have received (charitable funds).
