The Eye Clinic Appeal

SA005 Eye Clinic Appeal – 2018 - 2020

The Countess Charity exists not to fund patient care, but to enhance and improve it by providing grants for projects that are over and above those provided by core NHS funding.  Any help and support The Countess Charity can give to support patient care is always appreciated by our clinical colleagues.

The Countess of Chester Hospital Eye Appeal  has been set up to establish a new injection suite for patients who have Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which is the most common cause of visual impairment in the developed world.  The clinic will treat those with Wet AMD, who, without treatment, will have serious rapid loss of vision.  As Mr Ali, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Clinical Lead in Ophthalmology said “modern treatment of Wet AMD in the form monthly injections into the eye has revolutionised the outlook for these patients and prevented severe sight loss in millions of people”

‘Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe sight loss in the UK. It mostly affects the elderly population. Timely treatment is required in the form of monthly injections in the eye to save and improve eyesight.

We currently have one injection room in the Ophthalmology Department at the Countess of Chester Hospital which is used throughout the week to full capacity. However, the demand for treatment is growing exponentially. We carried out 2000 injections in 2015 compared to 3500 injections in 2018. We need a second injection suite in order to be able to continue to provide a safe and efficient service for these patients.

With an extra injection suite we should also be able to have one stop clinics where patients have consultation and injection treatment on the same day.”

We are raising £175,000 for the Eye Clinic Project. These funds would allow the enhancement of the clinical environment where patients are treated, specifically those patients with wet age-related macular degeneration.
