Midwifery
The overall philosophy of Maternity Services is to provide each
woman with the appropriate care, at the appropriate time, for the
well being of both mother and baby. All women are booked for
Midwifery Led Care unless the risk assessment undertaken at booking
indicates that Consultant care is required, care is then shared
between the Midwife and Consultant Team.
To support women who require additional assessment during pregnancy
the hospital has a well established Obstetric Day Unit, Fetal
Medicine, Medical Disorders and High Risk Clinics.
The majority of women are booked by their community midwife at
their local Children's centre. For women in the Halton area a
weekly Consultant clinic is held at Halton Hospital.
All women carry a Hand Held Maternity Record which contains all
pregnancy related information. The latest version was updated in
2011.
Obstetric ultrasound is carried out by qualified Ultrasonographers
in the Maternity Ultrasound Department and a range of scans are
offered in line with NICE guidance. In 2011 first trimester
screening was introduced as recommended by the National Screening
Committee.
The Central Labour Suite has an assessment area, 10 delivery rooms
which includes a purpose built Waterbirth Suite and Family
Bereavement Room, a theatre and high dependency capacity. The
midwives work with women with a focus on normality and mobilisation
is encouraged in labour. Each shift is lead by an experienced shift
leader. There were 3228 births in 2010.
The post natal ward has a Transitional Care Unit allows babies to
receive special care, either with or without a preceding stay in
the Neonatal Unit. This reduces the separation of mother and
baby.
In December 2010 the Maternity Unit was awarded Baby Friendly
Initiative accreditation and strives to continuously improve its
breast feeding rates. Maternity Support Workers work in all areas
of Midwifery to support initiation and continuation of breast
feeding.
The Anaesthetics Department provides 24-hour emergency cover which
ensures access to mobile epidurals.
