"I just think it’s great that you’re learning while you’re getting paid to do it instead of just getting a normal job. It’s great that you’re gaining a qualification at the same time."
Katie Kempster, 21, works in Health Records
Can you tell us a bit about your role?
I prep clinic notes ready for the next day so I put in a history sheet and make sure thye’ve got labels and referral letters if they’re a new patient. If you don’t have the letters you have to email for them.
Is that quite stressful?
It can be sometimes. We try to be as organised as possible at all times, but if a file sometimes ends up where it shouldn't be we have to find it.
What’s a typical day for you?
I work from 8am to 4pm, but it’s on flexi so you can earn it back if you have to stay late. Friday is the busiest day because we’re prepping for the following Monday.
How did you become an apprentice?
I was just on NHS Jobs and I wanted to do an apprenticeship to learn on the job. I was working in a supermarket at the time and just wanted to move into a role with more opportunities to progress. I've been here two months now and I've loved it. The team I work with is a really nice group. I got my sister in here as well actually – she’s just starting today!
What’s she doing?
She’s in the scanning department, starting as an apprentice. She’s 21 as well, we’re twins.
What did you say to your sister to encourage her to come in and become an apprentice?
I just think it’s great that you’re learning while you’re getting paid to do it instead of just getting a normal job. It’s great that you’re gaining a qualification at the same time.
What were you hoping to get from the apprenticeship when you first started?
You get a nationally recognised qualification and I wanted to have a job that could allow me to learn and earn at the same time. It was a great opportunity to become part of the NHS.
What do you want to do in future?
No idea! I want to stay in the Trust but I don’t know if I’d stick at what I’m going or try something different.
