The Countess Charity funds new machine that provides life-enhancing nipple tattoos for breast cancer survivors
Patients undergoing breast reconstruction at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust now have access to a new, cutting-edge nipple tattoo machine, thanks to the generosity of hospital charity donations.
Money donated to The Countess Charity has funded the new machine, which is used to semi-permanent tattoo natural-looking nipples and areola onto patients who have undergone breast reconstruction.
When Karen Worrall, Senior Breast Specialist Nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, first joined the breast team in 2018, the hospital's tattoo machine was outdated but still functional, with only one consultant able to offer the service and no dedicated clinic for patients.
Demand for the service was high, leading to long waiting lists, but among those waiting was a patient who was so moved by her experience that she donated funds specifically to expand the service.
Her contribution allowed Karen and her colleague Tracy to receive specialised training to set up a clinic that offered regular nipple areola tattoo appointments, and it proved a big success.
However, it became apparent that the machine was outdated, prompting Karen to seek additional funding from The Countess Charity for a new machine – which the team who run the charity were delighted to do.
Karen said: "With the charity's support we have been able to secure a brand-new tattoo machine and pay for some more training which has taught us how to use new needles and techniques for better, long-lasting results.
"These tattoos are a vital part of the healing process for many women. Being able to offer them the best possible care with results that last is incredibly rewarding. I truly love this part of my job," she added.
Patient Susan Blything, who has used the nipple tattoo machine several times over the years, described it as 'revolutionary in every way possible'.
"I have been so privileged to have use of the tattoo machine over the years, which has been expertly used by Karen with absolutely wonderful results every time, " she explained.
"Having this done completes the process of feeling confident with your body image and feeling whole again. The transformation from this procedure impacts you positively during and after your journey of change, and the breast care nurses have supported and answered every question with compassion.
“They are a truly wonderful team."
