The Department of Cellular Pathology
The Cellular Pathology department provides a comprehensive
Histopathology, Non Gynaecological Cytology and Morbid anatomy
service to the population of Chester and surrounding areas as well
as parts of North Wales.
The department is fully accredited by CPA (UK) Ltd and is also
licensed by the HTA under the terms of the Human Tissue Act 2004 to
carry out post-mortems and associated activities.
The department handles a range of histological material
encompassing a wide spectrum of adult morbid anatomy and
histopathology / cytopathology. Diagnoses are usually made on
sections stained by routine techniques; however more complex
specialist diagnostic histochemical and immunohistochemical
techniques are also available. An on-demand frozen section service
is available. All consultants are actively involved in
multi-disciplinary team working, including managed clinical
networks for various cancers.
Non-Gynaecological Cytology is the examination of a range of
specimens, including sputum and other respiratory specimens, urine,
body cavity fluids and fine-needle aspiration specimens. Our
Consultant Histopathologists offer an ad hoc FNA service to other
clinicians in the Trust. Synovial fluid examination for crystals is
performed as part of the service to Orthopaedics and
Cervical cytology samples are still collected by Trust transport
from General Medical practices from Western Cheshire PCT and Trust
colposcopy/gynaecology clinics. These samples are processed and
screened at Arrowe Park Hospital.
A Consultant led post mortem service is provided for the
clinicians of the Trust as well as to HM Coroner (for the
jurisdictions of Cheshire, Flintshire and Wirral). The facilities
are also used by forensic pathologists as and when required.
