Smoking Cessation Service

Attempting to stop smoking is one of the best decisions you can make for your own health and your finances. 

The Countess of Chester Hospital’s Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service can help ensure anyone who smokes tobacco gets the right support and assistance, to ensure that a patient’s withdrawal symptoms are managed and controlled effectively.

Smoking Cessation Nurse Specialist Zoe Short and Smoking Cessation Advisor Adam Tinsley comprise the tobacco dependency team.

The service aims to ease patients’ nicotine withdrawal symptoms and enable them to be more comfortable as an inpatient whilst also providing a valuable opportunity to make a serious quit attempt to stop smoking. This support is proven to help people to be more likely to succeed in making life changing improvements to their health.

The process starts on admission to hospital and identified as a smoker, they should begin on nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). This reduces withdrawal symptoms prior to a visit from a member of the tobacco dependency team who can educate and advise on the benefits of quitting smoking.

Patients will be offered expert and practical advice from the team who can continue to provide support throughout their quit attempt up until they are 12 weeks smoke free. During this period, the NRT will be provided free of charge through engagement with their local stop smoking services.

If a patient still wants to continue smoking, they will receive with information for the community services for future reference.

Overcoming an addiction to tobacco can be difficult but our service has the potential to benefit people and help create positive change.
