Cataract

Cataract is a common condition that results in cloudiness of the lens inside the eye, and most are related to increasing age.

Over time cataracts will cause vision to become reduced and will require
treatment in the form of cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery

Cataract surgery is a quick and straightforward procedure during which the cloudy lens is replaced
with a clear artificial one.

Before the operation patients will have an assessment at the Westminster Eye Centre during
which the shape and length of the eye will be measured to help the ophthalmologist calculate the
strength of the artificial lens to be used.

Aspects of general health, medication and any other precautions will also be discussed in relation to the surgery at this point.

The operation is usually performed under local anaesthetic, with most patients going home on the
same day.

Patients booked for cataract surgery will be issued with a letter giving details of where to report to
on the day of the operation.

After the operation a plastic shield will be taped over the eye for the first day and advice will be
given as to when this can be taken off and what cleaning care should be undertaken for the first 2
weeks after surgery.

Patients are advised before going home of the need to use any eye drops.

Not everyone needs distance glasses after cataract surgery, but many people may need reading
glasses.

If you have had recent cataract surgery do not visit your own optician until you are
advised to do so by a clinician to avoid any unnecessary expense.

Before surgery, if a cataract is affecting vision significantly the ophthalmologist may advise a
patient not to drive as they do not meet the legal driving standard.

After surgery, vision should be restored with or without the need for new glasses and the patient
will be advised when it is safe to drive again.

If you have recently had cataract surgery and are concerned about pain, a deterioration in your
vision or your eye has become sticky or itchy please telephone 01244 363017 (0900 – 1700
Monday – Friday).

Out of hours please contact NHS 111 or the accident and emergency department.
